Sharmeen Batra
Associate Attorney
Sharmeen Batra’s legal experience is focused primarily on family law in a wide range of matters including divorce, child custody and access, child support, spousal support, property division, adoption.
She is well-versed in negotiating and preparing family agreements, such as cohabitation, prenuptial, and postnuptial agreements. She has represented clients in court proceedings, mediations, arbitrations, and other dispute resolution processes. She has also completed formal mediation training through the ADR Institute of Canada, strengthening her ability to resolve disputes efficiently and collaboratively, particularly in complex cases.
Sharmeen obtained her Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Political Science and English, graduating with multiple academic honors from the University of Alberta. She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alberta in 2020.
During law school, she gained hands-on experience through clinical programs and volunteer legal services assisting individuals in family, civil, and criminal law matters. She articled at a boutique family law firm in Edmonton, Alberta where she previously worked in a legal support capacity and where she began her practice after being called to the Alberta Bar in August 2021.
Sharmeen was admitted to the New York Bar in November 2025. Since joining Whitson Law, she remains committed to providing excellent legal service to her clients, who can expect her to be well-prepared, organized, and professional. She brings a thoughtful, compassionate, and practical approach to representing clients navigating emotionally complex and high-stakes family matters.
Outside of work, Sharmeen enjoys traveling and spending time with her family, friends, and dog, Bowie, along with exploring all that the Capital District has to offer.
